Thankful…that I am going to Ethiopia!

2011 at 3:20 pm   |   by Nicole Whitacre Filed under Motherhood | Adoption

It’s Thanksgiving and my heart is full of gratitude. On Friday we leave for Ethiopia to meet two little people that I hope will be forever after ours. What an amazing privilege God has given us to pursue the opportunity to adopt these precious children. And I can’t wait to see the beautiful country of their birth.

We’re going to try to blog about our trip as much as we can next week, here at girltalk and at our adoption blog. The posts will probably be short, but we hope that just as you have “been there” for the birth of our biological children, you can come along for our adoption.

This is Jack and Tori’s first time on a plane and it will be a long flight, so please pray for peaceful travel. Please pray for God’s blessing as we meet these children for the first time. (The other day in the car, Jack blurted out: “I just can’t wait to meet them!” Me too, my son, me too.) And please pray that God would provide the recommendation letter we need from the Ethiopian Ministry of Women, Children, and Youth Affairs (MOWCYA) and give us favor with the Ethiopian judge who serves many children and families.

Thank you so much for your prayers. One faithful reader, Meredith from Australia, emailed me the other day to tell me she was praying (thank you so much Meredith!). It is more comforting than I can tell you that your prayers follow us across the ocean to meet these two precious children. More than that, I am confident and thankful that our heavenly Father’s goodness will follow us all the days and miles of our journey.

I’ll see you in Ethiopia!

christmas opened upOh, and I’ve been waiting a whole year to tell you about this advent calendar my family used last year. It is called Christmas Opened Up published by thegoodbook.com. The little book that accompanies the calendar provides a five-minute-per-day Bible study to do with your kids that tells the story of God’s rescue plan. It includes a brief opening activity or question, a Scripture verse, questions about the Scripture, and ideas for a brief prayer time. It was a fantastic way to spend the entire month focusing on the gospel over Cheerios with honey each morning. It encouraged the best kind of anticipation for Christmas Day and my kids can’t wait to do it again this year. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we did!

UPDATE: thegoodbook.com contacted us to let us know that they have now sold out of Christmas Opened Up. But they do have another advent calendar pack available called Countdown to the Coming of the King.

52home: For Your Home

2011 at 11:26 am   |   by Carolyn Mahaney Filed under Biblical Womanhood | 52home

dont wasteThe 52home project began as a daily picture of ordinary home life: 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. We girltalkers love the home, and a big part of our mission is to encourage and cheer you on as you love and serve and sacrifice for the people in your home. Thus the purpose of the 52home project: a daily reminder to see the glory peeking out from behind the ordinary.

Ever since we launched in March of 2010, we received numerous requests for permission to re-print Janelle’s pictures. This gave us an idea—why not extend the benefit of 52home so that you can enjoy these photos, as well as other pictures Janelle has created, in your very own home. It took some convincing to get Janelle to agree, but after many months we’re finally ready to unveil 52home@home, for your home.

Now you can enjoy these pictures as you come in your front door, wash dishes at your kitchen sink, walk down your hallway, or rock your baby to sleep. By bringing the 52home project into your home, we hope you will see your own ordinary, yet glorious life in these pictures, that you’ll glimpse the faithfulness of God that undergirds his faithful ones, and that you’ll see reflections of the eternal in the everyday.

We hope to make you smile at home.

Enjoy the 52home collections!
